A few years ago, I stumbled upon the website of one of my previous students. She’d become a writer and had already published a children’s book. It looked like she was doing all of the things that I wanted to be doing, and I admit that I felt jealous and maybe even a bit scared. Was I able to make it if she was already doing it ahead of me? At that time, I didn’t have a clear vision for the future of my writing, and I felt threatened every time another person got ahead in their writing career. I was operating from a scarcity mindset. I assumed that her success, especially the success of someone much younger, meant that there wasn’t enough success left for me to achieve. While that may sound a bit disillusioned, many people face similar thoughts. However, if we look at life as an unlimited vat of untapped potential and success rather than a pie to be divvied up until it’s all gone, we can begin to see how our scarcity mindset might hold us back.
How can you use the success of others as a way to motivate yourself forward?
