What Are the Benefits of Becoming a Certified Life Coach?
Becoming a certified life coach shows clients you’re a professional with quality training; since you’ve gone through the extra step of getting educated, you’ll be able to serve your clients even better. Whether you’re a health coach, executive coach, relationship coach, or anything in between, there are programs tailored to your niche that will help you reach your business goals. Since it’s not required, some life coaches skip out on formal education or certification; however, studies have shown that 85% of life coaches agree their clients expect them to have some sort of certification. That’s a HUGE percentage of clients that you don’t want to miss out on!
“Coming into Coach Training EDU, working with other coaches and trainers, and role-playing and listening each session, I really began to understand, yeah, I can do this,” said Nick Sanchez, a CTEDU Executive Coaching Graduate. “I can actually be a coach, and I think we all can. That was a really beautiful moment to think that all of us could be coaches too.”

“The experience of this training was the most transformative experience of my life. My instructors modeled every aspect of coaching that we are taught to develop and their patience with each of us was amazing. What I didn’t expect from the experience was the bonding with my classmates. We learned as much from each other as we did from the program. I left this class feeling excited that there are good people out there who are working hard to learn how to help everyone they work with become the best version of themselves. These instructors and classmates are now my coaching family, and I know they will be there to support me as I continue to grow in this field!” – Mark O’Dekirk via Google

Pros and Cons of Coach Training EDU’s Program
Pros:
Hardbound textbook, all training requirements for ICF certification, and lifetime membership are included. It also includes a robust catalog of additional courses for niches, advanced training, and additional certifications such as the NBHWC. CTEDU uses a learning philosophy based on positive psychology and Hope Theory, which lend to an open and empowering learning environment. It also has a robust alumni network and weekly Business Building Masterclasses to help your coaching business succeed from the start.
Cons:
No in-person courses offered. Courses fill up and you may need to wait a week or two before you can begin your program. CTEDU’s program isn’t the cheapest on the market but is competitive with programs of a similar caliber.

“Strongly recommend TCA for anyone who is looking to grow with an amazing likeminded community! If you are wanting to become a coach this place will exceed your expectations with the resources, the ongoing coaching sessions and webinar are you can attend even after becoming certified.” – Ashley K. via Google
Pros:
Thriving Coach Academy teaches the “Premium Business Model” – instead of working with more clients, this model focuses on charging premium rates and working with fewer clients. The program teaches coaches how to build genuine relationships, build confidence, and know how to attract and serve high-level clients. They also offer lifetime access to weekly business mentorship classes and 150+ hours of video lessons.
Cons:
The program pricing can be unfeasible for many, and there are not many payment options for those outside of North America. The program also includes a broad overview of many specializations, instead of having coaches narrow their focus.

It is one of the most expensive programs, and business development modules are not included. There are no scholarships available, and European students face an additional VAT cost of over $2,000, significantly raising the total price.

Reviews & Graduate Feedback
3.7 star rating on Google
Pros:
- Lumia trains students on recognizing and managing bias—both their own and their clients’—which supports deeper, more inclusive coaching. Students also gain lifetime access to course materials and a business-building platform. Payment flexibility and partial scholarships (for Essentials only) help increase accessibility.
Cons:
- The path to ICF certification is somewhat confusing, as students must first complete the Essentials program before entering the Signature track. The program is not Level 1 Accredited. Mentor coaching and ICF exam preparation are only included in the Signature level, meaning Essentials alone doesn’t fully prepare students for ICF credentialing.
Erickson Coaching International

Reviews & Graduate Feedback
4.8 star rating on Google
Pros:
- Erickson is one of the oldest and most established coaching schools, with over 75,000 graduates globally and a well-respected curriculum based on the teachings of Milton Erickson. The school offers flexible course schedules, including intensive and weekend options, allowing students to complete certification at their own pace. The Erickson Plus platform provides access to peer coaching, a global coaching community, and business-building resources.
Cons:
While the core program price is reasonable, many features require an additional monthly subscription to the Erickson Plus app, which increases long-term costs. Mentor Coaching, a requirement for ICF Certification, is also not included in the core program price. Scholarships are not available until 2027, which limits accessibility for students who need financial assistance.

Reviews & Graduate Feedback
4.4 star rating on Google
Pros:
IIN is a pioneer in the health coaching field and offers a nutrition-forward curriculum with a holistic approach to health and wellness. Students receive lifetime access to a supportive community, business-building resources, and ongoing education. The program offers flexibility through a 6- or 12-month track and is available in both English and Spanish.
Cons:
The core certification does not include ICF accreditation, which may be a drawback for those wanting to become life coaches. To gain NBHWC eligibility, students must also purchase an additional practicum. The program is largely self-paced with limited live interaction unless additional components are added.

Reviews & Graduate Feedback
4.0 star rating on Google
Pros:
- HCI teaches evidence-based methods, including motivational interviewing, positive psychology, goal science, and trust-building strategies. Students are supported by the lifelong “Heart Warriors” mentorship program, which fosters community, collaboration, and peer learning. A job or paid-client guarantee adds a layer of financial assurance for new coaches.
Cons:
- The program is only accredited for the NBHWC certification, which may be confusing with how the “Life Coach Certification” is marketed. The ICF hours are only for Continuing Education Credits. While HCI offers a lot of content, the business coaching program is still in development and lacks the depth currently offered by other schools. The program is primarily self-paced, which may not suit students who learn better through structured live instruction. Unlike other schools, scholarships are limited or unavailable.

Pros:
Includes free subscription to Vibly, an all-in-one coaching platform for booking clients and managing payments Access to an alumni Facebook group and optional business and SEO help from a Certified Coach (available for $99/30 minutes).
Cons:
The structuring of the program can be confusing for those not well versed with the ICF. The “Coaching 101” and “Coaching 102” programs are not accredited unless they are completed together in combination with the mentor coaching package. The intensive style of the program is not conducive to launching a business with success and truly absorbing coaching concepts. No financing options for the full $4,495 Level 1 bundle, which may be a barrier for some. Business development support is limited and available only to alumni via paid add-ons.

Life Coaching FAQs
Here are some common questions people have about life coaching certifications and life coaching in general!
How Long Does It Take to Complete the Program?
This is an important factor when deciding what program is a good fit for your life and schedule. Many life coaches transition from another career, or might still be working their full-time job while receiving training. For those students, online self-paced courses are a great way to complete your training in the evenings and weekends. However, live instruction is required for ICF certification. Most accredited coach training programs take between 6-18 months to complete, with a few exceptions that can get you started in just a weekend!
What Variety of Courses are Offered?
One of the most important factors in success for life coaches is finding your niche. Whether that’s as a health and wellness coach, a personal growth coach, an executive coach, or another niche– you’ll want to find a program that aligns with the specific niche you’re hoping to work within. Look for a program with additional courses beyond the basic programs that help you dial into your specific niche.
Where are the Courses Offered? Online? In-Person?
Life coaching courses come in all shapes and sizes. Looking at your schedule, your personal goals, and your own life is the first step in figuring out what style of learning will suit you best. If you prefer an in-person-style classroom, look for a local program that offers that style of classes.
What is the Cost of the Program?
Life coaching certification can cost anywhere from $4000 to upwards of $20,000. The programs will vary in quality and accreditations offered with the price points. You’ll want to look for a mix of value and cost that works for your goals and starting your coaching practice. For more formal training programs, you can expect to pay $2000-$8000. Many of our selections fall in the $4000-$5000 range.
Where Do You Find Reliable Reviews?
Reviews from past students and industry professionals help determine credibility of the programs. This is an important way to educate yourself on how the program works for students now in the field.
You can find reviews from trusted platforms like:
- The Better Business Bureau
- Trustpilot
- Google Reviews
- Yelp
- Bark
Best Certifications for Life Coaches: What is the ICF?
While there are many certifications available, it’s important to find one from an organization that is widely recognized. The International Coaching Federation is recognized as the industry gold standard for coaching certifications.
What Does ICF-Certified Mean?
The International Coaching Federation is the leading global organization for coaches and coaching. They are dedicated to helping grow the success of coaches and the industry at large by setting a high bar for what meets ICF accreditation. The ICF offers three levels of certification: Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and Master Certified Coach (MCC).
Is Certification for Life Coaches Required?
Not technically, but studies show and our own experience proves that clients prefer to work with certified coaches. It will not only help take your coaching to the next level, but it will help you develop credibility that helps you excel in your new career.
What Steps Are Required to Get ICF-Certified?
To earn a credential you’ll complete these five steps with the ICF:
- Obtain a coach-specific education that meets ICF requirements for core competencies and code of ethics.
- Gain coaching experience, logging hours coaching with clients after your program is completed.
- Receive mentor coaching to strengthen your skills and continue your education.
- Pass a performance evaluation that assesses your coaching skills against ICF standards.
- Pass an oral exam.
Why Coach Training EDU Is the Best Continuing Education for Life Coaches
CTEDU was founded by John Andrew Williams and Amois Williams. They aimed to create a cutting-edge educational program for life coaches that will prepare the next generation with the skills they need to thrive in their new craft. John and Amois met at Brown University, but didn’t start as life coaches. They each began their careers elsewhere and found their way to coaching as a calling later on. Like many of the students, they had epiphanies that this was what they were meant to be doing. Expanding their coaching practices to create the best life coaching education they can means they could help train even more people so that every person has the opportunity to work with a well-educated coach.
Our students inspire us to include more philosophies and niches each year. We’re creating an education that will carry students throughout their new career. Learn more about our mission and approach or explore our full training programs.
