Agency is our belief in our ability to succeed. It includes all of the things we tell ourselves about our skills, talents, and abilities and everything we believe we are capable of achieving. Unfortunately, our brains aren’t the most reliable place to pull this information, and it’s not uncommon to have thoughts about ourselves that aren’t necessarily true. For example, we might believe that we don’t have the ability to learn a new skill or that we aren’t good enough to put ourselves out there. These thoughts wreak havoc on our confidence and forward progress. It’s important to distinguish between what’s true (I don’t have the credentials to accomplish this goal.) and what’s not true (I can’t learn something new this late in the game.)
What lies are you telling yourself about your ability to succeed?
