Questions to Consider When Changing Your Habits

Questions to Consider When Changing Your Habits

Changing Your Habits

The decision to form a new habit or break a bad one can feel overwhelming. Here are some questions to consider when changing your habits to get to the root of how this change aligns with the person you want to be.

Identify a Habit You’d Like to Change

The first step is identifying what it is you’d like to change about yourself and how this habit influences that. A certified life coach can help you work through this process with clarity and structure.

  • Why do you want to change this habit?
  • How will this habit make your life more fulfilling?

Reflect on the Impact of this Habit on Your Daily Life

The power of habits is that they occur unconsciously. This behavior happens everyday, reflect on what that has meant for you.

  • How has this habit served you?
  • How has this habit harmed you?

Make a Personal Commitment to Change this Behavior

Now that you’ve identified the habit and reflected on its impact, you have to make a commitment to yourself to change. Understanding how behavior change connects to goal setting can strengthen that commitment.

  • What are the risks of not changing this habit?
  • What are the benefits of changing this habit?

Create an Action Plan for Habit Questions

Now let’s bring this to life. Create a plan, write it down and set the scene. Know how you’re going to implement or remove this habit while thinking of all the scenarios in which you’ll be tempted to go against the commitment you made to yourself.

  • What will you do the next time you’re tempted to repeat old behavior?
  • Ask how would your future self feel about this new habit a month from now?
