Coaching to Flourish - Takeaways

Powerful takeaways:

  • Explore the importance of setting expectations for your coach as a possible new client.

Quotes:

In defining what makes a question powerful effective, John states it should be:

"A question that reframes your client's thinking."

Ale expands further with:

"It's not necessarily what you ask, but how does it impact your client when [asking] that, the place you take your client within themselves to explore."

In describing how powerful questions affect her, Ale describes it this way:

"It shifts my energy and brings emotions out."

"It's generous. I feel like powerful questions are generous. They are gifts." - John

Other takeaways:

"In school, we don't have listening class, but we do have speaking. Coaching is basically listening class. It's so nice to have someone ask any question and know that they are devoting 100% of their attention to you. You don't have to fight for the mic. You don't have to fight for the attention. You can take all the time you want." – John

"What I love about coaching conversations is I feel like there's this [thing] in our society. We don't have a great system for listening. Our culture isn't based around listening as much as it is about talking. Coaching is about listening." - John

"Ask yourself the question, if I'm trying to create this kind of change in the world, if this is the mission I'm after, what is the dollar amount I need to be financially sustainable? When you're looking at it from that perspective, you're making money, not for your sake, but you're making money so you can be sustainable to create the change you want to make. That is the perspective shift. Once you get there, it becomes clearer. You know who you need to work with, how you need to work with them, how much to charge because you're doing it for the sake of the mission. You'll notice your own stress level goes down and the excitement goes up. You start taking risks and taking action steps you wouldn't normally take. That's when you know you're on the right path." – John

"There is so much empowerment that happens when you are allowed to go into the pain without someone trying to immediately fix it, but to be there with you, just to be present there with you. It's sacred work." - John
