Well-Being and Being-Well

Carol Ryff in 1989 undertook the challenge of crafting a theory of psychological well-being. She arrived at six different elements: self-acceptance, positive relationships, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. The list reads like a recipe for an amazing life, and in the process of diving deep into her research and literature review a common theme keeps emerging. Those who feel in control of themselves and surroundings and have relationships built on mutual respect are flourishing.
