A few years ago, after a particularly rough patch of my life, my mom got me a candle holder that said: When nothing goes right, go left. While I’ve since burned up that candle, I’ve kept the candle holder all these years as a reminder that when life doesn’t go as we plan (which is a given) we have the power to choose to go in a completely different direction. At the time, I was pursuing a career in education with no vision or purpose. Despite enjoying the people I worked with, I was frustrated and unhappy. So, I pivoted. I went left. Today, I’m working in a career where I get to pursue my passion for writing every day. My work is meaningful and fulfilling, all because I chose to go left.
How do you know when it’s time to pivot?
