There is a scene in one of the Avengers movies where Tony Stark jumps off the ledge of his building as he presses a button on the bracelet he’s wearing. A few seconds later, as Tony Stark falls, his Iron Man suit bursts through the glass and plunges toward him, eventually enveloping him and preventing him from crashing to the earth. Because the suit is doing most of the work, it can be easy to overlook the gravity (no pun intended) of the scene; that Tony Stark trusted his own ingenuity with his life. He was confident that the thing he created would perform exactly as intended at precisely the right moment. This scene serves as a reminder that meaningful work has value, and it just might be the thing that saves us from ourselves.
What does it look like to trust yourself? Or What would it look like to invest this much trust in yourself?
