Autonomy and Environmental Control

Of Carol Ryff’s six elements comprising psychological well-being (the other four being: self-acceptance, positive relationships, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth) none point to the importance of exerting control as do autonomy and environmental mastery. Autonomy literally means being able to move and be on control of oneself. Environmental mastery points to your ability to manage your world and elements around you. Ryff seems to not just highlight but be underlying the idea that control is vital to well-being.

How much control do you claim in you life?

This Powerful Paragraph is based on an earlier exploration of Carol Ryff’s 1989 study on the six dimensions of well-being. Find the original study abstract here.
