What is Health and Wellness Coaching?
Health and wellness coaches are professionals who work with clients to help them to achieve self-determined goals related to health and wellness. The coach uses a client-centered approach to help their clients uncover personal strengths and self-awareness and mobilize them to taking meaningful action steps in their lives.

While the primary concerns of people seeking out a wellness coach are related to their health and wellness, the coaching approach goes further than giving the client diet and nutrition advice or exercise tips. This niche of coaching is about habit change. It is about empowering individuals with the self-awareness and motivation they need to make lasting change in their lives.

Increased Awareness of Wellness

Society is experiencing an increased awareness of the value of health and wellness and people want to lead healthy lives and feel good about themselves.

As human beings, we are constantly seeking to better ourselves, and one of the most prominent ways that people do this is through diet and exercise. In 2017, Statistics Brain Research Institute reported that 21% of the New Year’s resolutions made were related to losing weight and eating healthier. However, research from The University of Scranton suggests that only 8% of people actually ever achieve their New Year’s goals.

Additionally, as technology speeds up our daily lives and empowers more people with more information, living a healthy lifestyle becomes more than a proactive measure to avoid disease. It is a way to actually be more productive in the present moment. People who get good sleep and exercise regularly are happier. They are more fulfilled. And they are more engaged and energetic.

However, while people want to make lasting change, they simply do not have the tools, support and accountability to be successful. That is where wellness coaching comes into play.

Career Opportunities

Now is a great time to launch a coaching career in the health and wellness fields. Not only is there a high amount of interest in personal growth and having a coach (particularly related to personal health and well-being) from individuals but there is a high demand for these coaches in both the healthcare and corporate sectors.

The healthcare system is chocked full of people with health issues, and healthcare professionals – ie. practitioners, dietitians, etc. – do not have the time or the necessary skill set to help people implement long-term habit change.

In addition, the recent focus on preventative healthcare around the world provides a unique career opportunity for health and wellness coaches within the healthcare system. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 21% increase in the number of jobs for health and wellness coaches through 2021, and they have stated that it is one of the fastest growing occupations in this economy.

Health and wellness coaching is changing the way we do healthcare, and the positive results are prompting a demand for more trained and certified health and wellness coaches around the globe.

With the rise in healthcare costs and the increasing awareness of the benefits of coaching, more and more corporations are implementing workplace wellness programs for their employees. The RAND Workplace Wellness Programs Study found that in 2012 approximately half of employers with at least 50 employees, and 90% of those with more than 50,000 employees, offered some sort of wellness program in the workplace.

Furthermore, the 2014 Aon Hewitt employer survey stated that 66% of employers top desired healthcare outcome for their employees was to increase participation in wellness, health improvements or disease management programs.

One of the most exciting things about the field of health and wellness is that it is ever changing and growing. Once you are educated and trained in the skills and tools of a health and wellness coach, you have the opportunity to work in various industries, with a variety of people, and you have the choice of where and with whom you want to work.

And more than launching a career, you will have the opportunity to infuse society with concepts to create a more compassionate and kinder planet. When you tap into the larger mission of coaching skills and concepts, establishing and launching a coaching career becomes more about cultural change than your business. The beautiful part is that when you focus on helping others and truly making a difference, while doing smart business work, your coaching career thrives.
